According  to the steam forums there was an unexpected Maintance that brought down the  whole system for the better part of today. If you were one of the many that was infuriated that you couldn't play your games, your not alone. Over 4,000,000 active players around the world lost their connection to steam today, with teases of connections going up and down all day for brief seconds. there was a 30min of stable uptime but then went down again.  All this was caused by new code added to the steam servers yesterday in there update. This new code made the system unstable and brought it down to its knees. Seems to be up and running at this time. if you are having issues getting your games to run close your Steam client completely and wait 1min then restart it games should work as intended.
